The theme for this first academic Black History Month at UTSA is I Am Not Your Negro, which is based on the 2017 award-winning documentary that seeks to recount the story of race in modern America through the words of James Baldwin's unfinished manuscript, Remember This House. While the historical component of the documentary is undeniably powerful, describing Baldwin's encounters with civil rights giants, it also gives something more: a first-hand, intimate account of what it was like to be Black (and gay) during the tumultuous times of the Civil Rights movement. Through Baldwin's recollection of his experiences in 1960s America, he not only explores the complexity and consequences of racial strife, but also provides an inspiring and profoundly impactful perspective on Black identity that resounds across generations.
